How to use the currency converter

What is this tool for?

This converter instantly works out what an amount is worth in another currency: how many euros is $100?, how much does an item priced at £50 cost in dollars? It comes in handy when planning a trip, comparing prices on a foreign website, estimating an international transfer or keeping an eye on a currency. About thirty currencies are available, including the US dollar, euro, British pound, Canadian and Australian dollars, Swiss franc, Japanese yen and Chinese yuan.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Amount: enter the sum you want to convert.
  2. From: choose the currency that amount is in.
  3. To: select the currency you want the result in.
  4. Read the result, updated as you type, along with the exchange rate and the inverse rate. The Swap button flips the two currencies in one click.

Where do the rates come from?

The converter uses the euro foreign exchange reference rates of the European Central Bank (ECB), published every business day at around 4 pm Central European Time and retrieved through the public Frankfurter service. They are not updated on weekends or public holidays: the date shown below the result is the latest publication.

The ECB quotes every rate against the euro. To convert between two other currencies, the calculation goes through the euro:

Rate A → B = (€1 in B) ÷ (€1 in A)

Example: if €1 = 1.12 USD and €1 = 0.85 GBP, then 1 USD = 0.85 ÷ 1.12 ≈ 0.759 GBP.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the rate I'll get from my bank or a currency exchange?

No. The reference rate is a mid-market rate. Banks, exchange bureaus and card issuers add a margin and sometimes a fixed fee, which can reach several percent. The result gives you the benchmark value so you can judge whether the offer you're given is a good one.

Why doesn't the rate change in real time?

ECB rates are set once per business day. They are perfectly suited to everyday use (travel, shopping, budgeting) but not to trading, where prices move every second.

My currency isn't in the list. Why?

The ECB only publishes reference rates for about thirty of the most traded currencies. Currencies it doesn't cover can't be offered here.

Does the tool work offline?

An internet connection is needed to download the rates. They are then stored in your browser for a few hours: if your connection drops, the converter uses the last rates it downloaded, and their date stays visible.
